Using Gesso to Create Textured Paintings

Image
High Quality Gesso builds texture The impasto technique is well known. It is a method where you lay paint over an area of your canvas in very thick layers. In most cases so thick that the brush or painting-knife leaves visible strokes. This can be done with paint, but it is far better to use gesso to achieve the same purpose. Why? Because gesso is far less expensive than paint, and the same texture and color can be achieved simply by adding the desired paint color to the gesso. Every color and hue can be achieved in this way. When the gesso and paint mixture dries, the result will be a painting which appears to be coming out of the canvas. The most important consideration is the consistency of the gesso. Gesso should not be too thin if the texture is what you are working to build. High-Quality brand Gesso is ideal. It will allow both ease of application, and reasonable drying time as you work on your next textured masterpiece.

Gesso is not Optional

It makes no sense to paint a masterpiece on a canvas that has not been adequately prepped for the test of time.  That can best be achieved with a solid coating of gesso. Your canvas must be treated with a primer coat. The canvas you buy at the art supply store lacks a meaningful coating of gesso.  This can be corrected very easily.
